Oddities of the week
SYDNEY, Aug 24 AAP - Oddities of the week:
+ Mother of two Catherine Marie Maher, 28, has a list of things to do to make her
"feel alive again". Running naked in front of 20,000 fans at a Brisbane Broncos rugby
league match was one of them. It cost her 40 hours community service for disorderly conduct
and wilful exposure. Next she intends to stand on the wings of a Tiger Moth aeroplane
in flight.
+ Cricket's Sweet Tooth Theory came to light when a dozen mint lollies fell from Marcus
Trescothick's pocket as he dived in the field against Australia at Headingley. Commentators
said the belief was that sugar in sweets, transferred via a player's saliva, helped shine
the ball better and make it swing more. An England team source said Trescothick, who fights
a constant battle to stay in shape, only had sweets in his pocket because he "couldn't
fit a pork pie in".
+ Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation saved the life of a thief who nearly drowned at a Gold
Coast wildlife park. Nothing too unusual about that - except the thief was a bower bird
who became trapped in a creek under a hat he had just plucked from a visitor's head. "We
just blew puffs of air into his beak," said a staff member. "After about 10 minutes he
blinked. It was a first for all of us."
