NSW: Sydney forum on violence in schools meets this morning

(Embargoed until 0600 AEST, Friday, April 5)

SYDNEY, April 5 AAP - A major forum to discuss violence in schools will take placein Sydney this morning, just over a week after a street battle between students from twohigh schools in the city.

The Community, Police and Parents Forum will be attended by about 70 people, startingat 8.30am (AEST) in Governor Macquarie Tower.

The forum will consider issues such as gang activity, truancy and crime preventionin schools, Police Minister Michael Costa and Education Minister John Watkins said today.

Mr Costa said the most effective way to tackle the problems was a united approach bythe community.

"That's why we're bringing these groups together," the police minister said in a statement.

"The community must play its part in tackling social problems and not leave the policeto pick up the pieces."

The forum was announced by the NSW government last week after a vicious brawl involving30 youths from Randwick Boys High and Kingsgrove North High in Sydney's south.

Machetes, knives and steel poles were used in the fight, which left four teenagerswounded, two seriously.
