Fed: Lifetime Health Cover explained in advertising campaign

CANBERRA, Jan 16 AAP - The confusing Lifetime Health Cover system would be explained
to Australians in a series of television and newspaper advertisements over the next month,
Health Minister Michael Wooldridge said today.

As the end of the government's grace period approached Australians would be urged to
take out private health cover so as to avoid paying higher premiums.

BRISBANE, Aug 25 AAP - Australian adults get most of their disease-fighting antioxidants
from tea, a study shows.

In fact antioxidant activity is seven times higher in adult diets than children's diets,
thanks to beverages.

CSIRO researcher Dr Katrine Baghurst was commissioned by a major tea manufacturer to
analyse the role of beverages in the diet, drawing on information collected in the Australian
Bureau of Statistics national nutrition survey conducted in 1995-96.

She found that among tea drinkers, their favourite "cuppa" provides more than half of all
dietary polyphenols in the diet and 40 per cent of flavonoids - both strong antioxidants.

Antioxidants combat free radicals which build up in the body, contributing to cancer, stroke
and heart disease.

As a nutritionist, Dr Baghurst does not believe people should drink tea to the exclusion of
other sources of antioxidants such as fruit and vegetables, but she said non-tea drinkers
should be aware there may be health benefits in choosing tea.

CSIRO research - in rats - shows that black tea with milk may have an equal benefit in
reducing free radical activity as green tea, which is favoured in Asia and believed to
contribute to the low levels of heart disease on that continent.

Dr Baghurst points out that in other cultures children may be getting more antioxidants
through beverages: Indian children for example drink tea from an early age, and French
children take watered-down red wine.

"But I'd be more inclined to be pushing the message for children that they need milk for
their bones," she added.

Dr Baghurst also found that tea drinkers tend to consume above-average amounts of fruit and
vegetables.

Melbourne police have offered a $50,000 reward for information on the brutal murder of a
65-year-old man, who may have been tortured before being killed with his own walking stick.

Detective Superintendent DAVID SPRAGUE says PETER BINNS, who had changed his name to JOSEPH
EDWARD HECKER, was stabbed to death in his inner-suburban Fitzroy flat in July 1996.

He says Mr BINNS may have been tortured before being killed with his own walking stick,
which has a double-edged knife fitted to its end.

Superintendent SPRAGUE says police have a number of suspects and believe the attackers were
known to Mr BINNS, as there was no sign of a break-in at his flat.

An inquest into the death begins in the Melbourne Coroners Court this afternoon.

GOLD COAST, Dec 17 AAP - Three boy scouts lost in Queensland''s Lamington National Park
since Tuesday were reunited with their parents today.

The boys, aged 11, 12 and 14, were "fatigued and hungry" after their ordeal but otherwise
unharmed, CareFlight Gold Coast manager Ashley van de Velde said.

The trio, located last night by an SES search team, were winched out of heavy bushland by
CareFlight helicopter at 12.30pm after finding a suitable clearing.

Problems started for the boys soon after they left with a scout leader and another boy on
Tuesday for a 22km walk from Binna Burra to O'Reilly's Mountain Resort near the Queensland/New
South Wales border.

It is understood they went off the track and became disoriented in the rugged bushland.

The 21-year-old scout leader and a 12-year-old boy became separated from the three and were
found yesterday morning by CareFlight helicopter. They were winched out at noon yesterday.

Mr van de Velde said the scouts had been warned by national park authorities that the walk
would be too much for them.

"They were out there for three days and the kids were frightened out of their wits," Mr van
de Velde said.

"We're just glad it's all over."

FED:New $92m federal flood payment for Vic

CANBERRA, Feb 25 AAP - Victorian councils will receive a second federal government
payment of more than $92 million for flood relief.

Regional Development Minister Simon Crean said the commonwealth assistance followed
a request from the Victorian state government after the summer floods.

"The payment of more than $92 million to Victorian councils has been brought forward
by more than two-and-a-half months, Mr Crean said in a statement on Friday.
